Sharing Our Science: From Data Analysts to Fly Fishermen

800 450 Stroud Water Research Center

Our ability to share our science with a broad audience allows us to increase awareness and create a public dialog centered on the protection, preservation, and restoration of watersheds everywhere. It’s for that reason that our scientists and educators engage in both scientific and public forums to share their findings. The following highlights recent outreach to new audiences.

Bringing Data to the Stream

An example of a SAS program that compiles and graphs long-term dissolved organic carbon data from White Clay Creek.

Stroud Center’s Director of Information Services, Charles Dow, Ph.D., was recently interviewed in SAS® Insights: News and Views From the Analytics Experts. SAS is a software suite for advanced analytics and data management. The Stroud Center has been using SAS for decades to perform complex analyses on large datasets collected in our backyard and around the world.

“This meticulous study of thousands upon thousands of tiny, aquatic critters, along with other chemical, physical, and biological aspects of streams over 50 years, has brought about many tangible results and insights into how streams work, from drinking water sources for Philadelphia and New York City to mountainous regions of Costa Rica and tributaries of the Amazon in Brazil.”

Talking Clean Water and Fly Fishing

“To go fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air, with the rush of the brook, or with the shimmer of sun on blue water.” — Herbert Hoover, U.S. president and avid fly fisherman

Clean fresh water and good fly fishing go hand in hand, which is why Assistant Director Scott Ensign, Ph.D., was invited to talk with Mark Hopley of the Flyfishing 97 podcast. The interview delved into the history of the Stroud Center, the importance of preserving and restoring watersheds, and how fly fishermen and women can protect the habitats on which their hobby depends.
